Automation Industry Competency Model

The Automation Competency Model framework was developed through a collaborative effort involving the Employment and Training Administration and industry experts from the Automation Federation. In May 2014, ETA worked with the Automation Federation and subject matter experts to update the model to reflect the knowledge and skills needed by today’s automation professionals. The updated model contains new information on Cybersecurity in mission-critical operational technology, primarily focusing on industrial automation and control systems. Further, several key critical work functions and the competencies therein were modified to provide clarity. In 2017, the model was revised again to incorporate foundational workplace health and safety skills from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Safe Skilled and Ready Workforce Program, an initiative designed to help protect America’s workforce and create safe, healthy, and productive workplaces. The updated CMC competencies were reviewed and validated by subject matter experts identified by the Automation Federation.
