Career Cornerstone Center: Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine

Engineering technicians use the principles and theories of science, engineering, and mathematics to solve technical problems in research and development, manufacturing, sales, construction, inspection, and maintenance. Their work is more narrowly focused and application-oriented than that of scientists and engineers. Many engineering technicians assist engineers and scientists, especially in research and development. Others work in quality control, inspecting products and processes, conducting tests, or collecting data. Engineering technicians who work in research and development build or set up equipment, prepare and conduct experiments, collect data, calculate or record results, and help engineers or scientists in other ways, such as making prototype versions of newly designed equipment. Most engineering technologists specialize in certain areas, learning skills and working in the same disciplines as engineers. Occupational titles tend to reflect those of engineers. Electrical and electronic engineering technologists make up 42 percent of all engineering technologists. Opportunities will be best for individuals with an associate degree or extensive job training in engineering technology. There is a wide range of options when it comes to educational preparation in engineering technology. Most employers prefer to hire engineering technologists with at least a 2-year associate degree in engineering technology. Some universities offer two year associate degrees, others offer three or four year BS degree programs, and some offer both types of degrees.

During the announcement, Technology For All and Rice University were recognized for their research and service to community. Technology For All was recently selected for inclusion in the Giving Library, a groundbreaking initiative that connects donors to nonprofit organizations through online video interviews. In these interviews, our President and CEO, Will Reed, talks about the history, mission, vision and programs of Technology For All. Until now, Adam hadn’t been interested in the computer. The 3rd grader with high functioning autism preferred to walk in patterns around the classroom instead of sitting at his desk. On this day, the instructor was having the kids work with game-making software. The software uses a simple interface that lets students develop a basic computer game. The children are learning about technology at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bastrop County program in Smithville in a partnership with Technology For All. The day started out as normal with Adam’s sister, Connie*, taking him gently by the hand and leading him into the classroom. Adam shuffled in the door and stood next to Connie as she sat at the computer, then he paced back and forth behind his sister’s chair as she worked on today’s lesson. Something on the computer screen caught Adam’s interest and he sat down next to his sister. “I thought Adam had missed class, because I didn’t see him walking around”, said John Dees, TFA Training Manager who was monitoring the TFA classes.
